TRAVEL INFORMATION TO YALE and PHELPS GATE 2019
You are expected to arrive at Phelps Gate at 344 College Street, the main entrance to the Old Campus (freshman campus), by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 17 for the 6 day trips and Monday, August 19 for the 4 day trips. The FOOT leaders will be awaiting your arrival. We will have a table set up right past the entrance gate so you won’t miss us! There are over 100 FOOT Leaders and we will have FOOT T-shirts on. You will be housed for one night in Bingham Hall on the Old Campus.
If you are coming by car you will probably be coming by way of either highway I-91 or I-95. As you approach New Haven, both highways will have signs for Downtown New Haven, Highway 34 (Exit 1 from I-91; Exit 47 from I-95). Exit onto this highway and then from 34 take the last exit. After you exit from the ramp, at the first light, take a right onto York Street. Follow the road 4 blocks to Elm Street. Take a right onto Elm Street and go 2 blocks to College Street. Take a right onto College Street and Phelps Gate is on the right in the middle of the block. The New Haven Green will be on your left and Phelps Gate on your right (344 College Street).
If you get lost, just ask for directions to the New Haven Green. There is a Yale University Security Office right in Phelps Gate. Their number is 203-785-5555. The Yale Police can always help you too. Their number is 203-432-4400.
If you are flying into New York or Hartford, you can get here by Connecticut Limousine from New York and from Hartford, but you will need to take a taxi from its New Haven terminal to Phelps Gate. It is a good idea to make a reservation. Their website is www.ctlimo.com. If your luggage gets lost on the plane, have it shipped to the FOOT Program Director’s house: c/o Cilla Kellert, 865 Orange St. #3, New Haven, CT, 06511.
If you are flying: Wear your hiking boots!! Carry any and all essentials on your body in case you lose your luggage! This does happen!!
If you are coming by bus or train, you should take a taxi to Phelps Gate on the Old Campus.
Early Arrivals: If you are flying from the West Coast and/or need to come in a day early, this is fine. You can stay with the leaders on the Old Campus in Bingham Hall. Please let the summer coordinators know your plans. It helps us to know your estimated time of arrival. Our Support Crews will be on hand to greet you. Just note that the leaders will be doing last minute preparations; however, you can meet other early arrivals!
Please check the Yale Freshman Handbook or the Yale Freshmen website (www.yale.edu/freshmen) for more information on getting to campus.
Remember it is best to arrive at FOOT with just your backpack and an overnight bag that will be stored during the trips. Mark this overnight bag with your name and residential college clearly on the outside for storage. Have your parents bring the rest of your belongings on Friday or have it shipped to the campus UPS.
Final note: Don’t worry if you are late on the arrival date. We are on the Old Campus ALL DAY & EVENING.
